A QR scan should take the engineer to the right lifting equipment.

Bind a QR tag to an equipment record and use it on site to check identity, status and previous findings. The scan starts a traceable workflow rather than another disconnected spreadsheet row.

A label works only when the underlying register is accurate

A QR code does not itself prove that a crane, sling or shackle was examined. It points to the equipment record. That record needs a reliable identifier, location and history, and the engineer still checks the physical item against it.

For firms with many similar accessories, the scan reduces time spent looking for the matching record. If a tag is missing or damaged, the team can still search using the equipment identity and site details.

The tagged-equipment journey

  1. 01

    Bind the code

Connect the printed label to the correct equipment record and check its serial, type and site.

  2. 02

    Scan on site

Open that item’s record, including current status and earlier examination reports.

  3. 03

    Record the examination

Capture findings, photographs and any defect against the selected item under the relevant LOLER 1998 workflow.

  4. 04

    Retain the outcome

Keep the completed report with the item so the next scan can lead to its updated history.

What the engineer can check after a scan

A QR label is an identification aid. The competent person remains responsible for verifying the equipment and conducting the thorough examination required by LOLER 1998.

  • Equipment name and unique identifier
  • Client, site and location
  • Safe working load where relevant
  • Current inspection status
  • Previous reports and defects
  • Next due date
